Overview

Registered in 2011 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Liberty', 'Dutch Flame' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its green leaf centers that flame and streak into broad, creamy white margins. The lance-shaped leaves are notably very shiny on the upper surface and slightly shiny beneath, with nine pairs of veins and a moderately flat profile.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms an upright clump reaching approximately 20 inches (50 cm) in height and 32 inches (80 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is noted for sun resistance, making it suitable for brighter positions than many hostas, though it performs best in typical hosta-growing zones with partial shade. The green-and-yellow scapes rise to about 28 inches (70 cm), and the plant's medium size suits it for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shade gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While noted as sun resistant, 'Dutch Flame' benefits from protection from intense afternoon sun, and standard slug and deer precautions are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
