Overview
Registered in 2011, *Hosta* 'Dubuque University Spartans' is a large, upright cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its blue-green leaves with blue margins, dull surfaces, and light corrugation. The broadly ovate leaves, each with a cordate base and 14 to 15 vein pairs, reach 10 inches (25.4 cm) in length and 7 inches (17.8 cm) in width.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial clump 25 inches (63.5 cm) in diameter and 14 inches (35.6 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. It is best sited in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage holds color well. Companion plants include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its upright habit and large size make it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so preventive measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent. It performs reliably in typical hosta-growing zones.
