Overview

Registered in 2006 from unknown parentage, 'Dewed Steel' is a small hosta cultivar distinguished by its unique aqua blue-green leaf color, which is produced by a heavy glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces. The leaves are ovate with rounded bases, slightly rippled margins, and a lightly folded, lightly wavy texture, with five pairs of veins.

In the Garden

This small hosta forms a mound 8.3 inches (21.1 cm) tall and 17.1 inches (43.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. The thick leaf substance provides good slug resistance, and the green scapes with purple dots bear flowers in late summer.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges; no special fertilization regimen is required beyond that typical for hostas in standard garden soil.
