Overview

Registered in 2011 as an open-pollinated seedling of (*H. 'Green Piecrust' x 'Just So'), 'Dandy Lion' is a large hosta cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, heart-shaped leaves with golden yellow margins and a dull green center. The leaves are lightly corrugated with flat margins, and the plant forms an erect mound of light gold foliage.

In the Garden

'Dandy Lion' reaches a mature diameter of 40 inches (101.6 cm) and a height of 28 inches (71.1 cm), with a moderate growth rate and a mound-like habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage, and deer are known to browse hostas, so appropriate deterrents should be considered.
