Overview
Registered in 2012, 'Cosmic Joy' is a large hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Fudge Ripple' and *H.* 'Beer Belly Blues'. It is visually distinguished by its dark green, heavily corrugated leaves with narrow, bright yellow, heavily rippled margins, and a moderately cupped, lightly twisted, and folded leaf blade.
In the Garden
'Cosmic Joy' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 42 inches (106.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is well-suited as a specimen or accent plant in shaded borders and woodland gardens. Its substantial size and bold leaf texture pair effectively with finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns, astilbes, or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Cosmic Joy' may require protection from slugs and snails, and deer browsing can be a concern in some areas.
