Overview
Registered in 2006, 'Coronation' is a large sport of a seedling of unknown parentage, distinguished by its broad, medium green leaves with pale yellow margins. The leaves are broadly ovate to nearly round with cordate bases, measuring up to 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide, with flat, dull surfaces on both sides and light corrugation. The margins range from 0.5 to 1 inch (1.3 to 2.5 cm) wide and are pale yellow, creating a distinct bicolor effect on the large, flat leaf blade.
In the Garden
'Coronation' forms a mound-like clump reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height and 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of shaded borders. Companion plants such as ferns, astilbes, or heucheras complement its broad foliage, though its large dimensions preclude use in small containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the large, flat leaves are susceptible to damage.
