Overview
Registered in 1996 by German breeder G. Braun-Nauerz, *Hosta* 'Corona' is a giant sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' distinguished by its blue-green leaves with deep gold, slightly rippled margins. The leaf blades reach 18 inches (45.7 cm) in length and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in width, with a cordate base, 14 vein pairs, and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a large, fast-growing mound 31 inches (78.7 cm) tall and 61 inches (154.9 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for use as a specimen or background plant in shaded to partially shaded borders. Its substantial blue-green foliage with wide gold margins pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Due to its giant size, it is not appropriate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges; this cultivar is susceptible to slug damage and may require management in areas with high slug or deer pressure.
