Year registered1995
Section classI-2

Overview

Registered in 1995 as a hybrid of *Hosta sieboldiana*, 'Cool Change' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its intensely blue-green, heavily rippled leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces. The substantial foliage, reaching 12 inches in length and 10 inches in width, forms a semi-upright mound with cordate leaf bases and 16 to 18 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Cool Change' produces a mound 54 inches in diameter and 32 inches in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom remains most pronounced. The substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or backdrop plant in woodland gardens, paired with ferns or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Astilbe* or *Heuchera*.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, textured leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though standard preventive measures are advisable in damp conditions; deer may browse the foliage.
