Overview
Registered in 2005 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Foxy Cat', 'Cool Cat' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its glaucous blue-green leaves heavily rippled with gold margins and streaked with multiple shades of green and greenish-yellow. The leaf blade is broadly ovate with a cordate base, deeply corrugated, and exhibits a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, while the scape is glaucous green and reaches 23 to 27 inches (58.4 to 68.6 cm) in height.
In the Garden
'Cool Cat' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter and 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height, making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to dappled shade typical of hosta-growing zones. Its variegated foliage provides contrast when paired with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials with solid green or dark foliage. The unusual yellow-streaked glaucous blue-green seed pods may be of interest to breeders seeking variegated blue-green seedlings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in spring and early summer when leaves are expanding, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slug and deer damage in areas where these pests are prevalent.
