Overview
Registered in 2005 by D. Beilstein, this small hosta resulted from a cross between *H.* 'Harvest Dandy' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Blue Blush' (pollen parent). It is distinguished by its narrow, lance-shaped blue-green leaves with lightly wavy margins, a slightly glossy upper surface, and purple petioles that contrast with the foliage.
In the Garden
'Hartford River' forms a moderate-growing, mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 33 inches (83.8 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is well-suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings due to its small stature. The lavender scapes, rising 9 to 10 inches (22.9 to 25.4 cm) above the foliage, provide a subtle late-season accent.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor accordingly in typical hosta-growing zones.
