Overview
Registered in 1978 by P. Aden, *Hosta* 'City Lights' is a large, mounding cultivar derived from crossing *H.* 'White Vision' (pod parent) with *H.* 'Golden Prayers' (pollen parent). It is visually distinguished by its broad, ovate green leaves with wide cream margins and a tall, upright scape bearing near-white flowers.
In the Garden
'City Lights' reaches a mature height of 42 inches (106.7 cm) and spreads to a diameter of 24 inches (61.0 cm), making it a substantial specimen for the middle to back of a shaded border or woodland garden. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the cream margins remain bright without scorching. The large, textured foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other broad-leaved hostas; its size precludes use in small containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the tender young leaves, though the thick substance of mature foliage offers some resistance; deer will browse the plant if given access.
