Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek through the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Chopsticks' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a cross between *H. pycnophylla* (pod parent) and *H. longipes* f. *hypoglauca* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with medium green margins, a glaucous bloom on the undersides, and a moderately wavy leaf margin.
In the Garden
'Hopsticks' forms a mound-like clump reaching 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter. Its leaves are ovate with a tapered base, 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) long and 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide, with 10 to 11 pairs of veins. The scape is medium green and reaches 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts or woodland garden settings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may cause damage, so monitoring and appropriate controls are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
