Overview
Registered in 2008, 'Chocolate Ripple' is a large hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Fudge Ripple' and *H.* 'Dorothy Benedict'. It is visually distinctive for its very upright, broadly ovate leaves that display a complex variegation of streaked muted yellow, white, dark green, and light green on a green ground with white margins, accompanied by slightly rippled margins and moderate corrugation.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial clump reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height, with scapes rising 30 to 36 inches (76.2 to 91.4 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its upright leaf habit makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen plant. The large, textured leaves pair well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in form or color.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Chocolate Ripple' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
