Overview
Registered in 2001, *Hosta* 'Chivalry' is a small-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Flamboyant'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Metalica'* (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually distinguished by its dark blue-green, ovate leaves with rippled margins and a slightly shiny surface on both sides.
In the Garden
'Chivalry' forms an upright mound reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 21 inches (53.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and is well-suited to small garden spaces, rock gardens, or the front of shaded borders. Its compact size makes it appropriate for container cultivation. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small hostas with contrasting foliage colors.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Chivalry' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
