Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek, 'Checkerboard II' is a large, mound-forming hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a thin glaucous bloom on the undersides. The ovate, cordate-based leaves are lightly folded, dull on the upper surface, and produce 12 vein pairs, contributing to a textured, substantial appearance.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a broad mound reaching 65 inches (165 cm) in diameter and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Water regularly to establish and maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Checkerboard II' is noted for slug resistance, though standard hosta care for typical pests in hosta-growing zones is still recommended.
