Overview
Registered in 2004 by J. Dishon, this medium-sized hosta cultivar is distinguished by its blue-green leaves with white margins and red-purple petioles and scapes. The broadly ovate leaves are slightly shiny above with a glaucous bloom beneath, featuring nine vein pairs and lightly wavy edges.
In the Garden
'Chariots of Fire' forms a moderate-growing, mound-like clump reaching 25 inches (63.5 cm) in diameter and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its variegated foliage provides contrast when planted near ferns, heucheras, or other shade perennials. The red-purple scapes, which rise 16 to 16.5 inches (40.6 to 41.9 cm) above the foliage, add seasonal interest.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
