Overview
Registered in 1988 by M. Zilis and T&Z Nursery, 'Change of Tradition' is a small sport distinguished by its narrowly oblong green leaves with crisp white margins. The foliage measures 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide, with eight vein pairs and a white marginal band 0.25 inches (0.6 cm) wide.
In the Garden
This compact cultivar reaches 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and spreads to 44 inches (111.8 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders or rock garden settings. It performs best in partial to full shade with consistent moisture, typical of most hostas. Its small stature and tidy habit pair well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; it also adapts well to container culture.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Change of Tradition' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage accordingly in typical hosta-growing zones.
