Overview

Registered in 2009, *Hosta* ‘Cerulean Magic’ is a medium-sized hybrid from the cross of *H.* ‘Gold Regal’ (pod parent) and *H.* ‘Blue Vision’ (pollen parent). The cultivar is distinguished by its intensely blue-green leaf margins and heavy glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces, with a particularly thick bloom on the underside.

In the Garden

‘Cerulean Magic’ forms a mound-shaped clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom is best preserved. The ovate leaves with cordate bases, measuring 7 inches (17.8 cm) long by 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide and bearing 11 vein pairs, pair well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, ‘Cerulean Magic’ is susceptible to slug and deer damage, and the glaucous bloom may be diminished by overhead irrigation or heavy rainfall.
