Overview
Registered in 2014 by originator M. Zilis and registrant K. Schwarz, *Hosta* 'Cease Fire' is a medium-sized sport of *H.* 'Fired Up'. Its most distinctive feature is a dark blue-gray leaf center bordered by pure white margins of uneven width, ranging from 0.5 to 1.25 inches (1.3 to 3.2 cm), with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces.
In the Garden
'Cease Fire' forms a mound-like clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 26 inches (66.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-gray center color is most pronounced. The ovate, lightly wavy leaves with rounded bases and 11 to 12 vein pairs provide textural contrast when paired with fine-leaved perennials such as ferns or astilbes. Its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
