Registered in 1981 by G. Krossa and P. Ruh, 'Cardwell Yellow' is a large hosta of unknown parentage distinguished by its green leaves with bright yellow margins. The foliage is notably erect in habit, with leaves measuring 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide, bearing 13 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Cardwell Yellow' forms a substantial clump reaching 23 inches (58.4 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or in mixed borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for gold-margined cultivars, where the bright yellow edges contrast well with darker green companions such as ferns or *Heuchera*. The erect leaf habit provides vertical interest in the garden.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Cardwell Yellow' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing; monitor accordingly.
