Overview
Registered in 2003 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Canby' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its unusual spring coloration. The ovate leaves are medium green with narrow, light green, slightly rippled margins, and the plant produces blue-green scapes reaching 30 to 35 inches (76.2 to 88.9 cm) in height.
In the Garden
'Canby' forms an upright clump 22 inches (55.9 cm) tall and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its moderate leaf folding and waviness add textural interest. The medium size suits placement in mixed shade borders or as a specimen in woodland gardens, though its slow spread makes it less suitable for rapid ground cover.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hosta cultivars.
