Overview
Registered in 1993 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Halcyon', 'Canadian Shield' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar distinguished by its green leaf margins and shiny upper surface. The leaves measure 7 inches (17.8 cm) long by 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, with 7 to 9 pairs of veins and a rounded base.
In the Garden
'Canadian Shield' forms a clump 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height, with scapes reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size suits border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage foliage; monitor and control as needed. Deer resistance is moderate; protect in areas with high deer pressure.
