Overview
Registered in 2000, *Hosta* 'Butter and Eggs' is a small-sized hybrid derived from *H. 'Neat Splash'. It is distinguished by its green leaves with gold margins and a fast growth rate, forming a compact mound 10 inches (25.4 cm) tall and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter. The leaves measure 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide, with six vein pairs, streaked greenish-yellow flat margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, a dull underside, and a rounded base. The scape, reaching 20 to 26 inches (50.8 to 66.0 cm) in height, is yellow.
In the Garden
This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its small size makes it suitable for border fronts, rock gardens, or container cultivation. Mature clumps spread to about 2 feet (61 cm) in diameter. It pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage.
