Overview
Registered in 2002 by D. Stone, *Hosta* 'Bruce' is a small, mound-forming cultivar of unknown parentage. Its distinctive variegated foliage features medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a very shiny underside.
In the Garden
This compact hosta reaches approximately 13 inches (33 cm) in diameter and 7.5 inches (19 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its small size makes it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border. The mound-like habit and ovate leaves with a flat base, which are lightly twisted, folded, and wavy, provide textural contrast when paired with fine-leaved shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
