Overview
Registered in 2007 as a selfed seedling of *Hosta sieboldiana* 'Elegans', 'Broken Hearted' is a giant blue-green cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, heavily textured leaves with cordate bases, glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and a fast, mound-forming growth habit. The leaves are lightly cupped and corrugated, with flat margins and 11 to 13 vein pairs, giving the plant substantial substance and a robust appearance.
In the Garden
'Broken Hearted' reaches 24 inches (61 cm) in height and 45 inches (114 cm) in diameter, forming a dense mound suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its large, blue-green foliage provides strong contrast when paired with fine-textured companions such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Astilbe*, and it works well as a specimen or in mass plantings. The green scapes, 18 to 20 inches (46 to 51 cm) tall, carry flowers that are typical for the species.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor and manage as needed.
