Overview

Registered in 1987 by K. Vaughn, this medium-sized hosta is a cross between *H.* 'Vaughn 73-2' (seed parent) and *H.* 'Frances Williams' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its green leaves with mottled creamy yellow margins, a trait inherited from its pollen parent.

In the Garden

Reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in diameter, 'Breeder's Choice' forms a compact, rounded clump suitable for the middle of a border or as a specimen in a shaded bed. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the creamy yellow margins remain bright without scorching. Companion plants include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other medium hostas with contrasting leaf shapes or solid green foliage. Its moderate size makes it appropriate for small gardens or containers.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor for these pests in moist, shaded conditions.
