Year registered1993
Section classIV-1

Overview

Registered in 1993, 'Brandywine' is a small hosta resulting from a cross between *Hosta montana* 'Aureomarginata' and *H. venusta*, with *H. longipes* f. *hypoglauca* as the pollen parent. The cultivar is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom on the underside.

In the Garden

'Brandywine' reaches a mature diameter of 15 inches (38.1 cm) and a height of 6 inches (15.2 cm), making it suitable for small garden spaces, rock gardens, or the front of a border. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or woodland perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*. Its compact size also makes it an appropriate candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through cultural or physical controls in typical hosta-growing zones.
