Overview

Registered in 1997 by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Bonanza' is a large, fast-growing cultivar of unknown parentage. It is distinguished by its heavily rippled, dark green leaf margins and a dull-surfaced, variegated blade with a rounded base.

In the Garden

'Bonanza' forms a substantial, mound-like clump reaching 41 inches (104 cm) in diameter and 23 inches (58 cm) in height. With 12-inch-long leaves and scapes rising 34 to 39 inches, it is best suited to partial to full shade, where its dark green margins contrast effectively with lighter companions. Its large size makes it appropriate for mid-border or as a specimen in woodland gardens; it is not recommended for containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Bonanza' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
