Overview
Registered in 1983 by K. Vaughn, this small hosta cultivar was produced from a cross between *H. 'Beatrice'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Frances Williams'* (pollen parent). The plant is visually distinctive for its compact, low-growing habit and dark green leaves with creamy white margins, a color pattern inherited from its parentage.
In the Garden
Reaching approximately 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 8 inches (20.3 cm) in diameter, 'Bold Edger' is well-suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging along pathways. It performs best in partial to full shade, though it can tolerate some morning sun in cooler climates. Its small size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation. Companion plants might include small ferns, heucheras, or other miniature hostas that share similar light and moisture requirements.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
