Overview
Registered in 1978 by Paul Aden, this large blue-green hosta arose from a cross between a seedling of unknown parentage and *Hosta* 'Blue Vision'. The cultivar is distinguished by its broadly ovate, heavily corrugated leaves with distinct blue margins and prominent veining, forming a dense, rounded mound.
In the Garden
'Blue Whirls' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains its color intensity. At maturity, the plant reaches approximately 24 inches (61 cm) in height and spreads to 42 inches (107 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad leaves.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
