Overview
Registered in 1970 by Mrs. J. Geissler, 'Blue Skirt' is a giant hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its broad, blue-green leaves with undulated margins, reaching 13 inches (33.0 cm) in length and 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) in width, with 13 vein pairs.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height, making it suitable for use as a specimen or in the middle to back of shaded borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size precludes container cultivation for most gardeners.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents.
