Overview

Registered in 2010 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sara's Sensation', 'Blue Sensation' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its heavily corrugated, thick, blue-green foliage with a glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring up to 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, feature 14 to 16 vein pairs, lightly wavy margins, and a cordate base, creating a substantial textural presence in the garden.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a slow-growing mound reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its blue-green leaves pair well with golden or chartreuse-foliaged perennials such as *Heuchera* or ferns, and the blue-green scapes, rising 22 to 34 inches (55.9 to 86.4 cm), bear lavender flowers in midsummer. Due to its large size, it is not recommended for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Typical hosta-growing zones apply; slug and deer resistance is moderate, so monitoring may be necessary in areas with high pest pressure.
