Overview
Registered in 2006 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Rain Forest Sunrise', 'Blue Maui' is a small blue-green hosta distinguished by its nearly round, cupped, and corrugated leaves with slightly shiny upper surfaces and dull undersides. The leaf blades measure 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) in both length and width, with nine pairs of veins and slightly blue-green margins.
In the Garden
'Blue Maui' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and its small size makes it well-suited for rock gardens, container plantings, or the front of shaded borders. Companion plants that contrast with its blue-green foliage include golden-leaved sedges or pale yellow heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents.
