Overview
Registered in 2013 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Blue Angel', 'Blue Magic' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its medium blue-green leaves with gold margins and highly variable yellow streaking. The broadly ovate, cordate-based foliage measures 10.2 inches (25.9 cm) long by 7.1 inches (18.0 cm) wide, with 12 vein pairs, lightly wavy margins, and a slightly shiny upper surface.
In the Garden
'Blue Magic' forms a dense mound 9.8 inches (24.9 cm) tall and 29.5 inches (74.9 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green leaf color and gold margins are most pronounced. The scapes reach 27.6 to 31.5 inches (70.1 to 80.0 cm) in height, bearing medium blue-green flowers. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size makes it unsuitable for containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season; apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
