Overview

Registered in 1997 by R. Benedict and B. Olson, *Hosta* 'Blue Chip' is a small-sized cultivar derived from a cross of *H. 'Dorset Blue'* as both pod and pollen parent. Its most distinctive feature is the intensely blue-green leaf color, combined with a compact, mound-like habit and flat leaf margins.

In the Garden

'Blue Chip' reaches a mature diameter of 15 inches (38.1 cm) and a height of 9 inches (22.9 cm), with a slow growth rate. It is best suited to partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, which require protection from direct sun to maintain their glaucous bloom. Its small size and rounded, dull-surfaced leaves make it an excellent choice for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border; it pairs well with other small shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or ferns. The plant is also well-suited to container cultivation due to its compact dimensions.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Blue Chip' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
