Overview

Registered in 2009, 'Blue Cascade' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between a white-backed form of *Hosta longipes* var. *latifolia* (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Elvis Lives' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green, heavily rippled leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, a color it maintains throughout the growing season, and for its lightly twisted leaf tips.

In the Garden

'Blue Cascade' forms a mound-like clump reaching 13 inches (33.0 cm) in height and 31 inches (78.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue coloration is most pronounced, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds; it is not typically recommended for container culture due to its spread.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Blue Cascade' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
