Overview
Registered in 2016, 'Baiyu' is a large, fast-growing variegated hosta of unknown pollen parentage, with *Hosta* 'August Beauty' as the pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its broad, dull-surfaced leaves with medium green flat margins and its exceptionally tall, straight scapes bearing numerous near-white flowers that whirl around the raceme.
In the Garden
'Baiyu' reaches a mature spread of approximately 150 cm (59 in) and a height of 75 cm (29.5 in), with upright foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its tall, erect scapes (up to 150 cm) with long racemes make it well-suited as a cut flower cultivar. Its large size and fast growth rate allow it to function as a bold specimen or background plant in shaded borders, where it pairs effectively with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hostas.
