Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Guacamole' registered in 1998, 'Avocado' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its greenish-yellow leaves with dark green, flat margins and exceptionally shiny surfaces on both sides. The leaf coloration reverses the typical pattern of its parent, with the lighter center framed by a darker border.
In the Garden
Reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter, 'Avocado' forms an upright, fast-growing clump suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its medium size and glossy foliage make it effective as a groundcover or in mixed shade borders, where it pairs well with ferns and other broad-leaved perennials. The 30- to 34-inch (76.2–86.4 cm) scapes bear lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Avocado' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor accordingly in areas where these pests are prevalent.
