Overview
Registered in 1986 by V. Grapes and the American Hosta Society, 'Aspen Gold' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its broad, green leaves with chartreuse yellow margins, creating a strong contrast between the darker center and lighter edge.
In the Garden
'Aspen Gold' reaches a mature spread of approximately 56 inches (142 cm) in diameter and a height of 24 inches (61 cm), making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its large, rounded leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its bold foliage. The plant produces scapes 16 to 22 inches (41 to 56 cm) tall, with flowers typical of the genus.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Aspen Gold' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent. It performs reliably in typical hosta-growing zones with adequate shade and well-drained soil.
