Overview
Registered in 2016, *Hosta* 'Aroma of Arbutus' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar of unknown parentage. It is distinguished by its ovate leaves with light green margins and a slightly shiny upper surface, combined with a very shiny underside, and is notably valued for the strong, pleasant fragrance of its flowers, which is reminiscent of the arbutus plant.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 36 inches (91.4 cm) and a height of 17 inches (43.2 cm), making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade. Its fragrant scapes, which rise 30 to 40 inches (76.2 to 101.6 cm) above the foliage, make it an effective specimen near pathways or seating areas where the scent can be appreciated. It pairs well with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns, astilbes, and heucheras.
Care Notes
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard precautions against slugs and deer are advisable in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
