Overview

Registered in 2005 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Arctic Sunset' is a sport of *H. 'Fortunei Hyacinthina'* distinguished by its medium-sized, upright clumps bearing ovate leaves with green centers and gold margins. The leaves are streaked with lighter green, pale yellow, and greenish yellow, with margins 0.25 to 0.5 inches (0.6 to 1.3 cm) wide that are light green and slightly rippled; leaf surfaces are dull on both sides, and the leaf base is flat.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of approximately 25 inches (64 cm) and a height of 13 inches (33 cm), with scapes rising to 28 inches (71 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its moderate growth rate makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded beds. The upright habit and variegated foliage pair well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size also accommodates container culture.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents may be necessary, as foliage is susceptible to both pests.
