Overview
Registered in 2002 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Ani Machi' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with gold margins, mottled yellow and green variegation, and unusual coloration that extends to the leaf undersides. The broadly lance-shaped leaves feature 6.5-inch (15.9 cm) length, 3.4-inch (8.6 cm) width, six prominent vein pairs, and moderately twisted, wavy margins with curly tips.
In the Garden
'Ani Machi' reaches 21.5 inches (54.6 cm) in height and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, with an upright habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other small woodland perennials. Its compact size makes it suitable for container cultivation, rock gardens, or front-of-border positions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season; apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are recommended for this cultivar in typical hosta-growing zones.
