Overview
Registered in 1999 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, 'Amethyst Joy' is a large hosta cultivar derived from a cross between *H. kiyosumiensis* and *H. pycnophylla*. The plant is distinguished by its dark green leaves with white margins, a rounded leaf base, and a slightly shiny upper surface with white undersides.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching approximately 21 inches (53.3 cm) in height and 52 inches (132.1 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or for filling mid-border positions in woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Amethyst Joy' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
