Overview
Registered in 2000, 'Amethyst Chip' is a small hosta cultivar resulting from a self-cross of *Hosta* 'Purple Verticulated Elf'. It is distinguished by its intensely blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a pronounced glaucous bloom on both surfaces, combined with purple-toned, heavily glaucous scapes.
In the Garden
'Purple Verticulated Elf' performs best in partial to dappled shade, where its blue foliage color is most stable. At maturity, the plant forms a compact clump approximately 16 inches (40.6 cm) in diameter and 6 inches (15.2 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. Its small stature makes it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border, where it pairs well with other small hostas or fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns and heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protection from slugs and deer may be necessary in garden settings.
