Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Loyalist' registered in 2006, 'Americana' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its stiff, horizontally flattened leaves with white centers and dark green margins. The broadly ovate leaves measure 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) long by 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, with eight to ten vein pairs, a dull upper surface, and a glaucous bloom underneath.

In the Garden

'Americana' reaches a moderate growth rate and mature dimensions typical of small hostas, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the white leaf centers are less prone to sun scorch. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials complement its compact form.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The white leaf centers are resistant to melting out, but standard slug and deer precautions are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
