Overview

Registered in 2004 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Choo Choo Train', 'American Icon' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its ovate, dull green leaves with broad, yellow, slightly rippled margins. The leaf blades reach 12 inches (30.5 cm) in length and 8 inches (20.3 cm) in width, with margins ranging from 1.75 to 3 inches (4.4 to 7.6 cm) wide, and feature 14 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'American Icon' forms a substantial mound 62 inches (157.5 cm) in diameter and 22 inches (55.9 cm) tall, making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded to partially shaded borders. Its large, bold foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The cultivar is not suited for container culture due to its size.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed.
