Overview
Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'American Gold Edge' is a small-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its medium green leaves with wide, greenish-yellow margins that are slightly rippled. The leaves measure 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) in length and 4 inches (10.2 cm) in width, with eight to nine vein pairs, a dull upper surface, and a slightly shiny underside with a cordate base.
In the Garden
This small hosta reaches a mature height of 15 to 18 inches (38.1 to 45.7 cm) in scape and forms a compact clump suitable for shaded to partially shaded borders, rock gardens, or the front of woodland beds. Its small size makes it appropriate for container cultivation. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small hostas with contrasting leaf colors.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'American Gold Edge' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
