Overview

Registered in 2000 by P. Ruh from the breeding work of H. Deshane, 'Allegan Emperor' is a large, mound-forming hybrid derived from *Hosta nigrescens*. Its distinguishing feature is a variegated leaf with dark green, slightly rippled margins and a very shiny upper surface, contrasting with a dull underside and cordate leaf base.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature size of 33 inches (83.8 cm) in diameter and 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its substantial leaves make it suitable as a specimen or in mixed borders with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns or astilbes. Its large size precludes use in small containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad, shiny leaves may attract these pests.
