Overview
Registered in 2008, this miniature hosta resulted from a cross between a seedling of *H.* 'Marbled Cream' (as pod parent) and *H.* 'Atom Smasher' (as pollen parent). 'Alakazaam' is visually distinguished by its narrow, lance-shaped leaves that display a medium green center with golden yellow, heavily rippled margins approximately 0.25 inches (0.6 cm) wide, combined with a deeply folded and intensely wavy leaf texture.
In the Garden
'Alakazaam' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and is well suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Its small stature makes it an excellent companion for other miniature hostas, small ferns, or shade-tolerant groundcovers such as *Viola* species, and it is particularly effective in containers where its wavy foliage can be appreciated at close range.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and snails, which may damage the delicate, rippled foliage, and from deer browsing where these animals are present.
