Overview

Registered in 2015, *Hosta* 'Academy Green Bid Paddles' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage (pollen parent unknown) from the seed parent *H. 'Bill Brinka'*. It is visually distinctive for its dark green, ovate leaves with flat margins that emerge and orient in all directions from the crown, creating a spreading, somewhat chaotic mound of very shiny foliage.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound 24 inches (61 cm) tall and 56 inches (142 cm) wide, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its glossy leaves provide textural contrast. The medium size and spreading habit make it a useful groundcover or filler in woodland borders, and it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade perennials. Its moderate size is not ideal for small containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed with appropriate controls.
